Remember/Forget

by Cherish Marquez

and from there I knew
I was alright
I thought
I was alright
but I wasn’t

crowns of thorns
and roses soft
and roses soft
soft beyond reach
She was beyond reach

as I looked
I could only see
from behind Her
She had long
dark hair

and
but
wait
I
remember

She was beautiful
it was beautiful
there was
a gold light
and it felt

Warm
I felt this warmth
and
I wasn’t scared
anymore

Did you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Have you heard me?
Did you
Will you

Roses

Soft

A digital artwork part of F&S's fifth zine issue, I'm Sorry.

Cherish Marquez (she/they) (b.1989 El Paso, Texas) spent her childhood in Sierra Blanca, Texas, & her adult life in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Currently, she lives & works in Denver, Colorado. She holds a BA in Fine Arts & Creative Writing from New Mexico State University & an MFA in Emergent Digital Practices from the University of Denver. She is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on digital media. Her work explores environmental justice, mysticism, mental health, queer identities, & healing from generational trauma. Her work operates from a queer Latinx perspective & is heavily subjected to speculative futurism.

"My work acts as the mediation between digital & physical spaces, hoping to bridge the gap from my cultural upbringing to my study in technology. I create a magic that is felt through my work, & which is often echoed through surrealist landscapes & animations that confront the viewer. My work reflects on the corporeality between the physical & the metaphysical, allowing the viewer to navigate through a fictional landscape of uncanny beauty, danger, redemption, & the unknown. I also have experience in digital fabrication, creative coding, & wearables. Within all of these different mediums, my work is recognized through my unique designs that carry my personality & message throughout. I challenge the viewer to question their connection with themselves & the world around them. I am hoping to guide the viewer to acknowledge the relationships we have with the natural world & the digital world. I strive to create accessible art & experiences that can be experienced by all, regardless of socioeconomic status, privilege, & ability."
